There are usually any where from three to six engines here. Beside switching in the yard they are used for local trains to Sanford and also for the many sidings in the Orlando area. (Orlando Tradeport
Florida Rock Industries, CSX Auto Ramp etc.).
Usually a couple of thru freight trains pass through the yard during the daylight hours as well as the Amtrak trains.
The Yard Master no longer gives permission to take pictures in the yard area or enter onto to railroad property.
Pictures can be still taken from the public areas (convenient stores, gas stations etc.) along route 17/92.
Usually a couple of CSX units at the south end of Rand Yard across from the Amtrak passenger station.
Amtrak has two separate stations here, one for the Auto Train and the other for the passenger trains.
This is the south terminal for the Amtrak Auto Train. An Amtrak switcher switches the auto racks around the terminal and makes up the Auto Train.
Amtrak also has a repair facility located here.
Security is tight in the Auto Train Terminal area and they do not like people going around taking pictures.
South of the Amtrak passenger station is the Conrad Yelvington Aggregate Plant and they have their own engine.
Pictures can be taken from the Amtrak passenger station platform.
The FEC Locomotive Repair Shops are located here. Lots of motive power here as well as the wreck crane. Also located here are the stored and out of service units.
You need to get permission from the yard supervisor (at the top of the stairs) before you walk around the property. They will not let you enter into the shop buildings.
Usually a couple of FEC units here depending on the time of day. Most units here do yard switching as well as running the local freight trains. This area of the FEC is most active between 5:00 and 11:00 PM.
On Sunday there is no yard activity and the locomotives are usually parked next to the parking lot.
Get permission from the Train Master located in the office to be on the property. Both he and the train crews are very friendly and helpful, the FEC Police are not.
When taking pictures stay on the roads next to the tracks. Do not enter the railroad property without permission and do not walk on the tracks.
FEC Police have been known to give out Property Tresspass tickets especially in the Cocoa area. Sometimes even the local police will question what you are doing.
The best way to find out if a train is coming or is in the area is by listening to a scanner radio.
